Manchester MAT Student Inspirational Role Model
"June 2, 2006 was the day my life changed forever," said UNH Graduate Student Constanza Valdés. "I remember standing in front of the immigration officer understanding very little of what he said."
In six short years, Valdés has an impressive set of academic and professional accomplishments in the United States. She graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Spanish from UNH Durham, was recently recognized for translating UNH Professor Janet Gold's book, "La Montaña Plateada" (Silver Mountain), about an historic mining village in Honduras, and is about to finish her Master of Arts in Teaching with certification in Spanish and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). A critical part of her journey was through Manchester and the supportive encouragement she received from some key members of the college's community.

Manchester MPA Student Deputy Fire Chief in Concord
UNH Master of Public Administration student Sean Toomey, spends his days serving as deputy fire chief at the Concord Fire Department and his nights studying for his master’s degree at the UNH Graduate School Manchester Campus.
An alumnus of UNH, Toomey graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He worked in the private sector as an engineering consultant and in 2001 completed his Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He joined the Concord Fire Department in 2005 as the assistant life safety officer.
When asked why he chose to pursue a career in public service he responded, “I felt like as a consultant I was fighting the rules…now I’m not fighting the system, I’m helping people. And it’s in my blood. My grandfather was the fire chief in Manchester for many years.”

UNH Graduate Student Takes Road Less Traveled
Dianne McCarthy had an MBA and a successful career as finance manager at a major corporation when she started volunteering as a mentor to inner-city kids. Eight years later, she knew she had to make a career change, in spite of being a top earner at her company.
“My husband is a college counselor, so I knew what I was getting into in terms of a major shift in financial compensation,” said McCarthy. “But it was time to make a change. I researched graduate programs in counseling, quit my job, and here I am.”
The UNH Master of Education in Counseling Graduate Program held the most appeal to McCarthy because of the broad range of courses required for the program curriculum. The program offers a combination of research, theory, and field-based experience to its students, providing graduates a well-rounded view of the field.

Master's Degree Gives Student Edge in Job Market
Matthew Flanagan completed his undergraduate degree in criminal justice in the summer of 2009, looked at the waning job market and two weeks later enrolled in UNH's Master of Public Administration program in Manchester. He accepted an entry-level position as a security officer with the hope that by the time he finished his degree he would be able to begin a career in the public sector.
"I thought going to graduate school would be an investment in my future, but even before I've finished my degree I've had two promotions," said Flanagan. Since he began the program, Flanagan has worked for global defense contractor BAE Systems and more recently was offered a mid-level position with Raytheon BBN Technologies. Flanagan credits his UNH graduate degree program for opening the door to these job opportunities that have increasing levels of responsibility.

MPA Students Get Up Close & Personal With State Officials
The UNH Master of Public Administration (MPA) graduate program, provided students the opportunity to observe both administrative and policy making hearings at the NH State House as part of the curriculum of the administrative law course.
“The objective for the ‘Day in Government’ is to allow the public administration students to observe the processes that they learn about in class, to interact with officials from all three branches of state government, and to encourage them to consider a career in public service,” said UNH MPA Professor Norman J. Patenaude, MPA, CALJ, JD. Read more ...
