Susan Smith

What was your background education and where was your degree earned from?

I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Saint Anselm College, a Master in Healthcare Administration for the Carlson School at the University of Minnesota, and a Graduate Certificate in Analytics from the University of New Hampshire.

What are some of your accomplishments during the program?

I finished my summer practicum 2016 project looking at the CMS system for ranking hospitals with a focus on how the scoring of Hospital Acquired Conditions impacts a hospital's ranking.  My team and I learned a great deal about how the ranking happens and began exploring ways to make the system as fair as possible

Can you tell us about any extracurricular or volunteer experiences you have?

Throughout my personal and professional life, I have maintained a passion for quality, advocacy, and being person-centered.  I am actively involved at the community, state, and national level working with organizations and projects that make a positive impact on the life experiences of others.  A few examples are Got Lunch! Laconia to feed school age children during the summer school vacation; Winnipesaukee Public Health Council with a focus on population health; and service trips to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi.

What are your areas of working interests and industries you may be particularly interested in?

My entire professional Career has been in health care, beginning as a staff nurse, moving into management and administration roles and most recently in health policy advocacy, where my focus has been on population health and engaging the consumer voice in transforming our healthcare system.  Completing the Graduate Certificate in Analytics will complement my working knowledge, skills, and experience in healthcare systems to help achieve the Triple Aim of improving the patient's experience (quality and satisfaction), improving the health of populations, and lowering the cost of health care for everyone.
